OAU Hospital Staff Rally Against 10-Month Salary Delay in Protest
Medical staff at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun State, have voiced their grievances against the management, alleging 10 months of unpaid salaries. In interviews with PUNCH Metro, employees revealed resorting to begging to sustain their families amid the financial strain caused by salary delays. One employee, identified as Ben, highlighted his inability to provide for his family since joining the hospital in December 2022. Another anonymous staff member cited the non-payment of salaries and challenging conditions within Nigeria’s health sector as factors driving medical professionals abroad. Despite efforts to address their concerns, the employees called on relevant authorities for assistance. The Chief Medical Director, John Okeniyi, referred inquiries to a tweet by the Minister for Health, Muhammed Ali Pate, who assured that the investigation had been completed and the matter would be resolved soon.
