Lagos Family Outraged as Suspected Abuser of 7-Year-Old Walks Free Due to Overcrowded Jails
The family of a seven-year-old girl, whose identity is being withheld, is seeking justice following the alleged sexual abuse of the child by a neighbor in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. In an interview with journalists on Thursday, the victim’s aunt, Adeola Adesanya, expressed dismay over the actions of the police. Adesanya claimed that the suspect was released without proper prosecution, citing overcrowded correctional centers as the reason for the release. Adesanya recounted the incident, stating that on October 21, her daughter reported catching the neighbor, known as Baba Abdulahi, in an inappropriate position with her foster sister. The victim confirmed that Baba Abdulahi had touched her private parts. When Adesanya confronted the man, he had disappeared. The case was reported to the Igbogbo Police Station, and after a payment of N5,000 for transport, the suspect was arrested. Subsequent medical tests conducted at two separate hospitals confirmed penetration. The police assured Adesanya that the case would be prosecuted in court. However, just days before the scheduled court appearance, Adesanya received a call from the police informing her that the suspect had been released due to overcrowded correctional centers. Expressing concern over the police’s handling of the case, Adesanya emphasized her commitment to ensuring justice for the orphaned girl under her care. She voiced fears that the current trajectory could lead to justice being denied. Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as calls and messages to his line went unanswered.
