FRSC distances itself from controversial Sharia Law proposal for traffic offenders

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disavowed comments attributed to one of its Sector Commanders that the agency is advocating for the introduction of Sharia Law to punish traffic offenders. The comments made by Mr. Yusuf Abdullahi, the FRSC Sector Commander in Bauchi State, were reported in various news outlets. Abdullahi claimed that the implementation of Sharia Law would deter unruly behavior by drivers since most accidents resulted from their negative attitudes. However, the FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Mr. Bisi Kazeem, has clarified that Abdullahi’s remarks are unfounded, baseless, and do not represent the position of the FRSC. Kazeem emphasized that the agency is a government body with a mandate to ensure road safety, and it operates in a manner that is sensitive to Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity. Furthermore, he stated that the Corps Marshal, Mr. Dauda Biu, has recalled Abdullahi to the FRSC’s National Headquarters in Abuja for administrative action, as his comments breached the agency’s regulations and standard operating procedures. Kazeem also stressed that the FRSC is not a religious or sectional organization and is not guided by Sharia, Mosaic, or customary law that contradicts the provisions of its establishment Act or the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
