Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets Eliminated from Under 17 AFCON, Miss Out on World Cup Qualification

The Under 17 Nigerian football team, Golden Eaglets, has been eliminated from the ongoing Under 17 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Algeria. In the quarter-finals, which took place at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Thursday, the team lost 1-2 to their Burkina Faso counterparts. This result means that Nigeria will not qualify for the 2023 FIFA Under 17 World Cup, as they failed to reach the semi-finals of the AFCON.During the match, Aboubacar Camara scored the first goal for Burkina Faso at the 45th minute of play due to a defensive error from Tochukwu Ogbiji. Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Richard Odoh, attempted to block the ball from entering the net but did not have enough power in his attempt. The ball fell at the penalty area and Ogbiji’s indecisive attempt gave Camara the opportunity to score. Ogbiji was also adjudged to have fouled Lassina Traore in the 18-yard box, and a penalty was awarded against Nduka Ugbade’s tutored side at the 57th minute. Camara converted the penalty kick to increase the goal tally for his team. However, Nigeria responded 10 minutes later through a tap-in goal by Abubakar Abdullahi, reducing the goal deficit for the home team. Despite this effort, it was not enough to see the Golden Eaglets through to the next round, and the game ended in favor of their opponents. On the other hand, Morocco, Mali, Senegal, and Burkina Faso have secured places at this year’s World Cup.
