Nigerian Army Nabs Marijuana Smugglers from Benin Republic

In a successful operation, troops of the Nigerian Army intercepted and apprehended two individuals suspected of attempting to smuggle a substantial amount of marijuana into the country. The incident occurred during a stop-and-search operation along Ajilete Road in the Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State on Tuesday.The arrested individuals have been identified as Matthew Edegbe, a Beninese national, and Joshua Dansu, a Nigerian. They were caught transporting the illicit substance in a truck that conspicuously lacked a number plate.According to a statement released by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, the troops acted on actionable intelligence and were able to seize the truck containing a staggering 397 wraps of the suspected cannabis sativa (marijuana). Further investigations unveiled that the contraband was being transported from Ghana and intended for delivery in Sango Ota, Ogun State.During the preliminary investigations, authorities recovered several items from the suspects, including a Benin Republic national identification card, a driver’s license belonging to a certain George Benyagbe, as well as mobile phones – an Infinix, an Itel, and an iPhone. Additionally, a sum of N7,000 was seized from the suspects.All suspects, along with the impounded truck and the confiscated exhibits, are currently in custody and will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further legal proceedings.Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, expressed his commendation for the troops’ dedication and vigilance in preventing the smuggling attempt. He urged them to maintain the same level of commitment in their future operations.The interception of this suspected international drug syndicate marks a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. The Nigerian Army’s continued vigilance and commitment to tackling such criminal activities are crucial in safeguarding the nation’s security and wellbeing.
