Labour Party’s Lagos State governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has unequivocally rejected the recent ruling by the election petition tribunal, which upheld the victory of incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In a carefully worded statement personally signed by Rhodes-Vivour on Tuesday, he asserted that the tribunal judges had committed legal errors in their judgment, suggesting a troubling disregard for a clear constitutional provision in the electoral process. Undeterred, he has announced his intent to pursue legal recourse by advancing the case to the appellate court.

The statement issued by Rhodes-Vivour reads, “Having meticulously analyzed the judgment of the Honourable Judges of the Tribunal, we firmly believe that, like the esteemed jurist once stated, they have erred in law. The Tribunal’s verdict, regrettably in our view, appears to render a significant constitutional provision within the electoral framework meaningless.”

While acknowledging the disappointment and concerns stemming from this ruling, Rhodes-Vivour reassured his loyal supporters that this decision represents just a single step within a broader legal process. He emphasized the fundamental principles of democracy, emphasizing that it relies on justice, accountability, and the rule of law, underpinned by an appeal process designed to rectify any judicial missteps.

He further stated, “The tribunal’s decision should not diminish our unwavering faith in the Nigerian Judiciary; rather, it should strengthen our determination to collaborate with other patriots in ushering in a compassionate leadership that will foster economic opportunities, allowing Lagosians to realize their full potential.”

Rhodes-Vivour asserted that democracy is the bedrock of any equitable and just society, embodying the voice of the people and their choice of leaders. He stressed that safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process is essential, as it extends beyond mere voting to the defense of the sanctity of the vote itself. In light of this, he affirmed his intention to appeal the judgment and expressed confidence in the appellate courts delivering substantial justice.
