40-year-old Man Arrested In Lagos for Raping His 13-year-old Neighbour

In a harrowing revelation before the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Lagos, Police Inspector Oyebisi Bolaji testified on Monday, shedding light on the disturbing case of a 40-year-old man, Monday Daniel, accused of sexually assaulting his neighbor’s 13-year-old granddaughter.

Bolaji, appearing as a prosecution witness and directed in her testimony by the prosecuting counsel, Olufunke Adegoke, recounted the distressing details of the incident that transpired in the Elere Agege area of Lagos. The victim, a minor, resides with her grandmother, and it was within the confines of this family setting that the alleged assault took place.

The dedicated police inspector went on to describe the pivotal role played by another neighbor, Uche Ube, who unwittingly stumbled upon the heinous act. Bolaji informed the court that it was Ube who, on the night in question, noticed Daniel’s suspicious presence within the grandmother’s residence. Ube’s prompt reaction and alarm-raising subsequently drew attention to the incident.

“In the dead of night, the defendant surreptitiously entered the grandmother’s dwelling,” Inspector Bolaji stated. “At that very moment, his neighboring witness, Uche Ube, rose from his slumber to relieve himself and was confronted with the distressing sight of the defendant in a compromising position with the young girl. Ube acted swiftly to alert others.”

During the formal arraignment, the prosecutor presented the court with the allegation that the defendant had committed the offense on October 11, 2021. The prosecution further underscored that this act directly contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

However, in a plea, the defendant asserted his innocence in the face of the charges brought against him.

Upon deliberation, Justice Abiola Soladoye, presiding over the case, ordered the remand of the accused, with a subsequent hearing date scheduled for November 23, 2023, to continue the legal proceedings.
