Governor Wike Directs Prompt Issuance of Promotion Letters to Eligible Civil Servants in Rivers State
During a Workers’ Day celebration in Port Harcourt, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers directed the State Civil Service Commission to promptly issue promotion letters to 4,000 eligible civil servants who were recently promoted in the state. The governor assured the completion of the entire promotion exercise for other categories before his tenure ends. He acknowledged the workers’ role in delivering the state’s action plans and services to the people and approved the promotion of over 4,000 eligible civil servants to their appropriate grade levels. Governor Wike called on the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to collaborate in safeguarding and advancing the state and citizens’ socioeconomic interests. He pledged to resolve the challenges facing the Civil Service regarding pensions and gratuities, among others, and appealed for the workers’ understanding and patience. The National President of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), Engr. Festus Osifo, lauded the workers’ hard work and the governor’s developmental strides. He promised to work with the incoming governor-elect to move the state forward and advocated for workers’ rights to be respected. The State Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Alex Agwanwor, appealed to the state government to implement the consentrative executive salary structure and restore the payment of overheads and rural allowances to enhance workers’ effectiveness. A worker, Mrs Edna Ufon, praised President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for increasing Nigerian workers’ salaries by 40%, and urged the incoming administration to improve the welfare of workers and the masses.
