In a shocking incident that unfolded on Wednesday, residents of Eleso community in the Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State successfully detained a middle-aged man identified as Sodiq Rofiu. The individual stands accused of brutally attacking his own mother with a club in an alleged bid to perform a money ritual.According to a source within the community, Sodiq, a father of four and a commercial driver, had earlier organized a prayer session with unidentified clerics. During this ceremony, a sacrificial ram was slaughtered as part of the proceedings. The suspect then extended an invitation to his mother, who resides in the nearby community of Omi-Adio, to join the prayer gathering.Unbeknownst to the unsuspecting mother, Sodiq cunningly locked the door and waited for the opportune moment to strike. He carried out the attack after luring his wife and children out of the house, leaving his defenseless mother at his mercy.In a desperate plea for assistance, the mother raised an alarm, prompting concerned neighbors to forcefully intervene. They managed to break open the door and rescue the victim, who was found bleeding profusely.An eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, provided a harrowing account of the incident: “He attempted to flee when he realized that the residents had been alerted. However, they swiftly gave chase and ultimately apprehended him. Law enforcement agents were called to the scene for investigation. A small wooden box containing a white cloth, a sharp cutlass, and the club used in the assault were recovered from the premises.”As of the time of this report, the suspect remained in the custody of the Amotekun security outfit, according to sources at the Omi-Adio Police Station and the Amotekun office in Eleso.Meanwhile, the victim was admitted to Emiloju Hospital for urgent medical attention. When our correspondent visited the hospital, the victim’s elder sister, Elizabeth, refuted the allegations of money rituals and instead attributed the incident to Sodiq’s history of mental illness. Elizabeth disclosed that Sodiq had previously received treatment for this condition approximately ten years ago.Yemisi, a prominent member of the Landlord Association, confirmed that the community had reached a collective decision to expel the suspect from their midst due to concerns for the community’s security.The investigation into this appalling incident is ongoing, as law enforcement authorities work to unravel the motive behind Sodiq Rofiu’s alleged attempt at a money ritual and to ensure justice is served.
