TRAGIC ROAD CARNAGE: 6 Lives Lost and 14 Injured in Ibadan-Oyo Expressway Crash

In a devastating incident that unfolded on Saturday, a fatal road accident on the Ibadan-Oyo Expressway in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State has resulted in the loss of at least six lives and left 14 others with varying degrees of injuries. The unfortunate incident occurred when the driver of an 18-passenger white Toyota Hummer bus, bearing the license plate Lagos JJJ 941 XA, experienced a burst tire, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.Eyewitnesses who were present at the scene revealed that the ill-fated journey began at the bustling Akinyele market in Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan, where the driver, purportedly driving at a high speed, embarked on the trip. Tragically, the occupants of the bus, all of whom were male, were en route to the northern region of the country when the accident transpired.Upon visiting the Atiba Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, our correspondent received confirmation from Bayode Olugbesan, the unit commander, who disclosed that four individuals had tragically lost their lives prior to the arrival of the rescue team. The injured victims were promptly transported to the Oyo State General Hospital for urgent medical attention.Olugbesan, attributing the cause of the accident to a combination of excessive speed and overloading, further divulged that a total of 20 individuals were involved in the distressing incident. He emphasized that the bodies of the deceased have been transported to the mortuary for preservation and further investigation.”The victims were all males, intending to reach the northern part of the country. The crash was a result of both speeding and overloading, as the bus was meant to accommodate only 14 passengers but was carrying a total of 20,” Olugbesan stated, underscoring the importance of caution while driving and urging motorists to avoid excessive speed, overloading, and nighttime travel.A team of journalists also paid a visit to the state hospital in Oyo, where they spoke with a senior medical professional, who requested anonymity. The medical personnel revealed, “Fifteen injured victims were brought to the hospital by road safety officials, but tragically, two of them succumbed to their injuries despite the immediate administration of first aid.”This heart-wrenching incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with reckless driving and the imperative need for motorists to prioritize safety measures. As investigations into the accident continue, authorities and road users alike are urged to exercise utmost vigilance and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life on our roads.
