Ogun River Claims Lives of Two Churchgoers in Tragic Drowning Incident

In a somber turn of events, two individuals identified as Femi Akinola and Tunde Falade have lost their lives due to a drowning incident that unfolded on Monday. The unfortunate incident occurred within the confines of a river where they had ventured for a swim.Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, released an official statement on Tuesday shedding light on the incident. According to Odutola, both victims, who hailed from Lagos and were visiting the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Onikoko, via the Itori area of the state, were pronounced dead at the Ifo General Hospital. Their attempts to navigate the treacherous waters had ended in a tragedy that left a community in mourning. As the details emerged, it was revealed that Adebayo Adeosun, a fellow member of the church, had contacted the local police station around 6:30 pm to report the heart-wrenching incident. Adeosun conveyed that a group of approximately seven young men, who had journeyed from Lagos to attend the church’s inauguration on August 27, 2023, had ventured out from the church premises to partake in a swim. Tragically, the excursion took a devastating turn as the group encountered difficulties in the water, leading to the drowning of two among them. The two unfortunate victims, Femi Akinola (32) from Odo Eran, Itire, Lagos State, and Tunde Falade (35) from Kola Alagbado, Lagos, were rescued from the tumultuous tides. Their valiant attempts to battle the waves had been in vain, and their lives were ultimately claimed by the relentless waters. Following the rescue, they were immediately transported to the Health Centre in Itori, where the attending medical doctor, with a heavy heart, confirmed their deaths.Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olayemi Jacob, promptly dispatched a team to the scene of the incident. The thorough assessment undertaken by the DPO yielded the conclusion that no traces of violence or foul play were evident. What transpired was a tragic accident in which the victims were overcome by the force of the water, marking a sorrowful chapter for both the Cherubim and Seraphim Church and the broader community. As investigations continue and the community grapples with the loss of Femi Akinola and Tunde Falade, this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and formidable power of nature.
