In a disturbing incident that has drawn widespread attention, the Anambra State Police have arrested a woman identified as Ukamaka Udugbo from Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state. The 50-year-old woman is accused of physically assaulting her 75-year-old mother, Mrs. Theres Nwaokaka, who was under her care. The arrest was confirmed by the Divisional Police Officer of Abagana Police Station, Superintendent Ifeanyi Umeh, following a prompt response to the incident reported by the NGO, 50-50 Action Group of the WomenAid Collective. The police were informed about the alleged abuse, prompting them to take swift action resulting in the detainment of the suspect.Once the necessary investigation and documentation are completed, the case will be transferred to the police command in Awka for further action.Mrs. Ify Unachukwu, the leader of the delegation from the 50-50 Action Group, expressed gratitude to the police for their rapid intervention and called on the force to ensure the incident is thoroughly addressed to serve as a deterrent to others.Describing the act as “very unfortunate,” Unachukwu condemned the violence against an elderly mother by her own daughter, urging young individuals not to emulate such behavior. As the news of the incident spread, the NGO also visited Mrs. Nkiru Okpata, the President General (women wing) of the Abagana Community, to discuss the matter. Mrs. Okpata expressed shock and disappointment, as Udugbo had held positions of responsibility within the community and church.Mrs. Okpata stated, “We are going to strip her of all her positions in the church and the community because she went against our rules and regulations.” This incident highlights the severity of the alleged abuse, given the perpetrator’s involvement in advocating against violence against women. The incident came to light through a viral video on social media showing Ukamaka Udugbo physically assaulting her elderly mother, Mrs. Theres Nwaokaka, while bathing her in Obeagu Umudun, Abagana. Mrs. Nwaokaka had been residing with her daughter, who was responsible for her care. The victim’s son, Mr. Emeka Nwaokaka, expressed shock at his sister’s behavior and noted that their mother had been living with her for a long time. He described the incident as “confusing” and revealed that his sister expressed remorse once the incident became public knowledge.Mrs. Eunice Anagor, the chairperson of the kindred to which Udugbo belongs, assured the group that they would ensure proper care for the victim, who is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.Mr. Ben Okongwu, the Community President General, assured the public that the matter had been reported to the Divisional Police Station, and justice would be served through the appropriate legal channels. He emphasized the community’s commitment to avoiding vigilantism and allowing the authorities to handle the case responsibly. As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to conduct a thorough examination of the incident and ensure that justice is served for the elderly victim and her family.
