The inferno quickly engulfed the entire building, causing extensive damage to its contents.Confirming the incident, Amodu Shakiru, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, shed light on the sequence of events that led to the catastrophic fire. Apparently, one of the occupants was cooking in the building’s corridor when the camp gas being used for cooking suddenly exploded.”It appears that one of the occupants was using a camp gas for cooking in the corridor, and when the gas exploded, it unleashed the devastating fire that rapidly consumed the building. Notably, we discovered that the passage of the building was being utilized as their makeshift kitchen, as there was no designated kitchen area within the premises. Additionally, we found no less than six camp gas cylinders within the vicinity,” Shakiru explained.The emergency call reporting the incident came in at approximately 9:05 am, prompting a swift response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services. Despite the severity of the fire, the firefighting team managed to contain it within the affected building, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures, which could have resulted in more extensive damage and potential casualties.Shakiru commended the quick response and heroism of officers from the Ojo military cantonment, who came to the aid of the firemen during their duty. Their timely assistance played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the firefighters as they battled the raging flames.While the incident caused significant property loss, it is fortunate that there were no reports of casualties. However, the unfortunate incident underscores the importance of adhering to safety protocols while using gas appliances, as such accidents can have disastrous consequences.
